Romeo and Juliet – Act II Scene 5 (‘Juliet and her Nurse’)

Briggs was one of a small group of British artists in the first half of the nineteenth century who consistently found success as history painters. This painting illustrates part of Act II Scene IV from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The lovers have previously agreed upon a secret marriage. Here the Nurse tells the overjoyed Juliet that she is to be married that night and then comments on her blushes (‘Now comes the wanton blood up in your cheeks’). Juliet and her Nurse was a popular subject with British artists including JMW Turner.

Overview

Tate Modern Museum located in London, United Kingdom is home to many galleries displaying paintings, sculptures and large-scale installations from artists around the world including Pablo Picasso, Yayoi Kusama and Henri Matisse.

For my midterm project I decided to look more into the dataset of Tate Artists from around the world and the art that was inspired by them. Listed above are some artists with fascinating work of art from different backgrounds and cultures.

I used OpenRefine in order to clean up the data by getting rid unnecessary information and grouping the dataset in an alphabetical and numerical order based on the names and years.

Process and Sources

I then exported it as a CSV file format and imported it into ArcGIS Online. I used ‘Nova’ as the base map and then separated each feature by males and females. Looking at the map, we can see that there are more male artists who’s work was published or displayed in the exhibitions than the female. However, there was about 493 other individuals who’s gender was unknown possibly because artists didn’t want to share out their gender identity or data wasn’t collected properly.

Analysis

The reason for the underrepresentation of women artists could be due to various factors. One possible reason according to “Digital History“, is historical and societal barriers that women faced in the past, such as women not being able to ‘vote or hold office in any state, they had no access to higher education, and they were excluded from professional occupations‘. This could have limited their ability to pursue artistic careers and gain recognition for their work. Additionally, gender bias and discrimination may have played a role in the underrepresentation of women artists in the art world, where men were often favored over women for exhibitions, commissions, and other opportunities. However, it’s important to note that there has been progress made in recent years towards greater gender diversity in the art world, and there are now more opportunities and platforms available for women artists to showcase their work.

Significance

The underrepresentation of women artists is significant because it highlights the gender inequality that women have historically faced in various fields, including the arts. Addressing this issue is important not only for achieving gender equality but also for promoting diversity and inclusivity in the art world. By providing more opportunities and platforms for women artists to showcase their work, we can help to increase their visibility and recognition, as well as encourage a broader range of perspectives and artistic styles. Ultimately, this can lead to a richer and more vibrant art scene that better reflects the diverse experiences and perspectives of all people, regardless of gender. women artists to showcase their work.
